Laying at anchor in Augusta Bay, Sicily

17 October 1952
"Mom said that Tub lost three (3) steers from bloating....they feel so bad about it. Ellen sat down and cried and Tub did not sleep for a few nites....They just passed the word for mail. Maybe I will get some mail from the prettiest wife in the world."

Note: Tub was Buss' oldest brother. He and his wife Ellen farmed in Minonk County, Illinois, where the boys were raised. Their eldest son, Steve "Skip" Gerdes, was the recipient of several cards, letters, and souvenirs from Buss's tours of duty.
