Buss continued to live at home and remained as active as possible with family, neighbors, and with their church family. He was admitted to the San Diego Naval Hospital on Saturday, March 20, 1976. Ruth received a phone call from the hospital in the early morning of March 21 telling her that Buss had passed away. His funeral was held on Wednesday, March 24 at the Little Chapel of the Roses in Glenn Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, CA. His older brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Ellen Gerdes, came from Illinois to attend the services.
