Life Without the Sailor

In Loving Memory-1976-2005
Shortly after Buss' death, Ruth suffered from a second 'nervous breakdown' and was sent to Mesa Vista Hospital in San Diego for a few months. Tim (age 21) was already out on his own, Sandy (age 19) stayed at home, and Debbie (age 15) took a Greyhound bus trip to Indiana and Illinois to visit a pen pal and her Uncle Carl and Aunt Ellen. Over the years, Ruth enjoyed going out to eat, visits from her grandchildren, her and Sandy's ever-enlarging pet cat population, and old Hollywood movies. Tim moved to Springfield, Oregon and had two children, Amanda and Andrew. He started up a pre-owned automobile sales lot, Main Street Auto Sales, and began showing classic cars for a hobby. Sandy remained at home and was a companion for Ruth throughout her years. She still lives in the house on Del Mar Avenue.  Debbie went to college, married, and had four children; Nathaniel Clark, Emily Ruth, Ryan Michael, and Rachel Louisa. She and her husband, Paul, settled in Grand Forks, North Dakota where she is a registered nurse.
Ruth lived in their cozy little house in Chula Vista for the rest of her life. She missed Buss terribly and was lonely for him until she died from a stroke on November 5, 2005, at the age of 84.

In Remembrance

Epilogue #6 1976
Buss continued to live at home and remained as active as possible with family, neighbors, and with their church family. He was admitted to the San Diego Naval Hospital on Saturday, March 20, 1976. Ruth received a phone call from the hospital in the early morning of March 21 telling her that Buss had passed away. His funeral was held on Wednesday, March 24 at the Little Chapel of the Roses in Glenn Abbey Memorial Park in Bonita, CA. His older brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Ellen Gerdes, came from Illinois to attend the services.

Epilogue #5 1974-1975

Epilogue #5 1974-1975
Note: Buss's last vacation with his Pace Arrow motorhome was in 1974, but only Debbie wanted to go with him. So, the two of them set off for a road trip visiting Hoover Dam, the Great Salt Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Jackson, Wyoming, Oregon, and the southern California coastline. By that late fall, Buss was noticing headaches and an inability to remember familiar names. He was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an inoperable brain tumor. The doctors informed Ruth and the kids that he probably had only six months to live. He retired on February 7, 1975, and spent that year raising rabbits in the backyard in hutches he built himself. At the six month mark, June of 1975, he took one last trip; this time it was by himself on Greyhound Bus Lines to visit his older brother, Carl, and family in Illinois.
This lengthy typewritten letter was presented to him by a co-worker on his 57th birthday. She had handwritten it from the outside-in on a roll of toilet paper. It provides a glimpse into his sense of humor and the camaraderie he shared with those with whom he worked.
